Dubai's summers are among the most extreme in the world. From May through September, temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, pavement surfaces can reach 70°C in direct sunlight, and humidity levels, particularly along the coastal areas, can make the heat feel significantly more intense. For small breed puppies, this environment presents real and serious risks that every responsible owner must understand and prepare for.
At Bolt's Family, we have been placing puppies with UAE families since 2020, and the number one question we receive from new owners during the summer months is: "How do I keep my puppy safe in Dubai's heat?" This comprehensive guide answers that question completely, covering everything from safe walk times and pavement temperature checks, to recognising heatstroke and setting up an enriching indoor summer routine.
Understanding the Risk: Why Small Breeds Are More Vulnerable
All dogs are susceptible to heat-related illness, but small breed puppies face heightened risks for several specific reasons. Understanding these physiological factors helps you make better decisions about your puppy's care during Dubai's hot months.
- Ground-level heat exposure: Small dogs are physically closer to the ground. Pavement and sand that has been heated by the Dubai sun all day can reach temperatures of 60–70°C. At 20–25 cm from the ground, small breeds are exposed to intense radiant heat that larger dogs, standing higher, experience less severely.
- Limited heat dissipation: Dogs cool themselves primarily through panting. Small breeds have smaller lung capacity and shorter muzzles (particularly in breeds like French Bulldogs and Shih Tzus), making heat dissipation less efficient.
- Rapid dehydration: Small dogs have smaller blood volume and can become dangerously dehydrated much faster than larger dogs. In Dubai's heat, dehydration can develop within minutes of strenuous outdoor activity.
- Puppies vs adults: Puppies under 12 months have immature thermoregulation systems, their bodies are significantly less capable of managing extreme temperatures than adult dogs. Extra caution is required with young puppies during summer.
Critical Safety Rule: Never leave your puppy in a car in Dubai, even with windows cracked, even for 2 minutes. Parked car interiors can reach 60°C+ within minutes in Dubai's summer sun. This is a life-threatening situation.
The Safe Walk Schedule for Dubai Summers
During Dubai's summer months (May–September), outdoor walks must be scheduled around the extreme heat. The following schedule is based on the Bolt's Family team's experience and is designed to keep your puppy safe while ensuring they still get adequate outdoor time.
Morning Walk Window
The optimal morning walk time in Dubai summer is between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM. At this time, pavement temperatures are at their coolest, air temperature is typically 28–35°C, and direct sunlight is less intense. Keep morning walks to 15–20 minutes maximum for puppies under 6 months.
Evening Walk Window
The evening window for safe walks is between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. While air temperature may still be 35°C or above, pavement temperatures will have dropped significantly after sundown. Test the pavement before every walk using the 7-second hand test, if you cannot comfortably hold your bare hand on the surface for 7 seconds, it is too hot for your puppy's paws.
The 7-Second Pavement Test, Do This Every Time
This simple test takes 7 seconds and could prevent serious paw burns. Place the back of your hand flat on the pavement surface. Hold it there for 7 seconds. If you need to remove your hand before 7 seconds are up due to heat discomfort, the pavement is dangerously hot for your puppy's paws. On shaded paths and grass, this test is much less likely to trigger concern, prioritise these surfaces for all summer walks.
Creating an Indoor Summer Routine Your Puppy Will Love
Many Dubai pet owners worry that their puppy will become bored or understimulated during the summer months when outdoor time is limited. The good news is that with the right approach, your puppy can be completely happy, healthy, and stimulated indoors during the hottest months.
Indoor Exercise Ideas
- Hallway fetch: A long corridor or hallway is perfect for short indoor fetch sessions. Use a soft toy to prevent damage to furniture or walls.
- Stair training (for older puppies): Going up and down stairs under supervision provides excellent physical exercise. Do not attempt this with puppies under 4 months as it can stress developing joints.
- Indoor hide-and-seek: Hide treats around your apartment in increasingly challenging locations. This combines physical activity with mental stimulation.
- Tug-of-war: A classic game that provides excellent physical exercise without requiring outdoor space.
Mental Stimulation, Critical During Summer
Mental stimulation is as tiring for a puppy as physical exercise. On days when outdoor activity is minimal, prioritise mental engagement to prevent boredom behaviours such as excessive barking, chewing, or restlessness.
- Puzzle feeders, use a portion of their daily kibble allocation in puzzle toys rather than serving it in a bowl
- Training sessions, 3 sessions of 5–10 minutes per day, each teaching or reinforcing a different command
- Sniff boxes, fill a cardboard box with scrunched newspaper and hide treats inside for your puppy to sniff out
- Kong toys filled with frozen peanut butter (xylitol-free) or wet food, a summer favourite that keeps puppies engaged for 20–30 minutes
Hydration, The Most Important Summer Priority
Ensuring your puppy is adequately hydrated during Dubai's summer is not optional, it is life-critical. Small breed puppies can become dangerously dehydrated remarkably quickly in extreme heat. Implement these hydration strategies consistently throughout summer.
- Provide multiple fresh water stations around your home, at least one per room your puppy has access to
- Change water at least twice daily, warm, stale water is less appealing and may discourage drinking
- Add ice cubes to water bowls to keep them cool throughout the day
- Consider a pet water fountain, the movement encourages many dogs to drink more
- On walks, always carry a collapsible travel water bowl and a bottle of cool water
- Add water or low-sodium broth to wet food to increase moisture intake
Recognising and Responding to Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a genuine medical emergency in dogs. Knowing the signs and the correct immediate response could save your puppy's life.
Warning Signs of Heatstroke
- Excessive, rapid panting, more intense than normal
- Excessive drooling or thick, ropy saliva
- Bright red, dark red, or pale gums
- Lethargy, weakness, or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Disorientation, glazed eyes, or loss of coordination
- Loss of consciousness
Immediate Response Protocol
- Move your puppy immediately to an air-conditioned environment
- Apply cool (not cold, not ice) water to the groin, armpits, paws, and neck
- Offer small amounts of cool water to drink if conscious, do not force it
- Place a fan near the puppy to aid evaporative cooling
- Call your veterinarian immediately, heatstroke requires professional treatment
- Transport to the vet in an air-conditioned vehicle as quickly as possible

Several products specifically designed for hot-climate dog ownership are worth considering for Dubai pet owners.
- Cooling mat: A pressure-activated gel cooling mat provides a cool resting surface. Place near the puppy's bed and they will naturally seek it out on hot days. Budget AED 80–200 depending on size.
- Protective paw wax: Applied before walks, paw wax provides a protective barrier against hot pavement. Apply before every outdoor walk during summer months.
- Cooling bandana or vest: Wet these specially designed items and they stay cool for 1–2 hours through evaporation. Effective for early morning or evening walks in summer.
- Frozen treats: Ice lolly moulds designed for dogs, fill with dog-safe ingredients (plain yoghurt, peanut butter, blueberries) and freeze for a cooling summer treat.
With the right preparation, awareness, and routine adjustments, your puppy can have a comfortable, safe, and happy summer in Dubai. The key principles are simple: limit outdoor time to early morning and late evening, always check pavement temperature, ensure constant access to fresh cool water, and provide rich indoor stimulation to compensate for reduced outdoor time.
