One of the most important responsibilities of puppy ownership in the UAE is ensuring your puppy receives their vaccinations correctly and on schedule. Vaccinations protect your puppy from serious, potentially fatal diseases, many of which are preventable at minimal cost when caught early through immunisation. In the UAE, some vaccinations are also legally required for pet registration and travel, making them doubly important.
At Bolt's Family, every puppy we place has already received their initial vaccinations before joining their new family. However, the vaccination journey does not end there, new owners need to understand and follow up with the complete schedule. This comprehensive guide explains exactly which vaccines your puppy needs, when to administer them, what each vaccine protects against, and where to get your puppy vaccinated in Dubai and the wider UAE.
Why Vaccinations Matter, Understanding the Diseases They Prevent
Before diving into schedules, it is worth understanding what we are actually protecting against. The core vaccines protect against diseases that can kill puppies within days of exposure, diseases that are still present in the UAE environment despite not being widely discussed.
Distemper
Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It is often fatal in puppies and can cause permanent neurological damage in survivors. There is no cure, prevention through vaccination is the only effective strategy.
Parvovirus
Canine parvovirus is perhaps the most feared disease in the puppy world. It causes severe, bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, and rapid dehydration. Parvovirus can kill a puppy within 48–72 hours of symptom onset. The virus is extraordinarily hardy, it can survive in the environment for over a year and is resistant to many disinfectants. In the UAE, where communal spaces, parks, and pet areas are shared, the risk of exposure is real.
Infectious Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
Canine adenovirus causes infectious hepatitis, affecting the liver and kidneys. Severe cases can be fatal, particularly in young puppies with immature immune systems.
Parainfluenza
One of the viruses responsible for "kennel cough", a highly contagious respiratory infection. While rarely fatal in healthy adult dogs, parainfluenza can be serious in puppies, elderly dogs, or immunocompromised animals.
Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease that is almost invariably fatal once clinical symptoms appear. It is transmissible from animals to humans, making it a public health concern as well as a veterinary one. In the UAE, rabies vaccination is legally required for all dogs and is necessary for pet registration with Dubai Municipality and other emirate authorities.
UAE Legal Requirement: Rabies vaccination is mandatory for all dogs in the UAE under Federal Law No. 18 of 1993 concerning animal welfare. Your dog must be vaccinated against rabies and registered with your local municipality. Failure to comply can result in fines and legal consequences.
The Complete UAE Puppy Vaccination Schedule 2026
6–8 Weeks: First DHPP Vaccine
The first DHPP combination vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis/Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) is administered at 6–8 weeks of age. All Bolt's Family puppies receive this vaccination before joining their new families, and we provide written documentation of this with every puppy. At this age, maternal antibodies from the mother's milk are still partially protective but beginning to wane, the vaccine begins building the puppy's own immune response.
10–12 Weeks: Second DHPP + Bordetella
The second DHPP booster is given 3–4 weeks after the first. This is typically when your puppy will be in your care, and you will need to schedule this appointment with your chosen veterinarian. At this visit, Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination is also recommended, particularly if your puppy will be attending puppy classes, visiting groomers, staying at kennels, or spending time in dog parks.
14–16 Weeks: Third DHPP + First Rabies Vaccine
The third and final puppy DHPP booster completes the primary vaccination series. At this same visit, the rabies vaccine should be administered, this is the legally required vaccine in the UAE and must be completed by 16 weeks at the latest for compliance purposes. Retain the vaccination certificate provided by your vet, you will need it for municipality registration.
12–16 Months: First Annual Booster
Approximately one year after the last puppy vaccination, your dog needs their first annual booster. This booster covers DHPP and Rabies, and triggers the immune system to refresh its protection. Missing this booster leaves your dog vulnerable, immunity from puppy vaccines begins to wane without reinforcement.
Every Year After: Annual Boosters
Annual DHPP and Rabies boosters are required throughout your dog's life. Some veterinarians in the UAE use titre testing to assess actual immunity levels and determine whether certain boosters are genuinely needed, this can be discussed with your vet from age 3 onwards.
Optional Vaccines to Consider in the UAE
Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
Highly recommended for any dog that interacts with other dogs, puppy classes, grooming salons, dog parks, boarding facilities, or off-leash areas. Available as an injection or nasal spray. Protection lasts 12 months.
Leptospirosis
A bacterial disease transmitted through water contaminated with infected animal urine. While less common in the UAE than in tropical climates, risk exists particularly after heavy rainfall or in areas with rodent activity. Discuss with your vet whether this vaccine is appropriate for your dog's lifestyle.
What Happens at a Vaccination Appointment?
For first-time dog owners in Dubai, understanding what to expect at a vaccination appointment reduces anxiety for both owner and puppy.
- Health check: The vet will examine your puppy before administering any vaccine, checking temperature, heart rate, and general condition. A puppy that is unwell should not be vaccinated.
- Vaccine administration: Most vaccines are given as a small injection under the skin, typically at the back of the neck. The process takes seconds and most puppies experience minimal discomfort.
- Documentation: You will receive a vaccination certificate, keep this document safe. You will need it for municipality registration, grooming salons, boarding facilities, and international travel.
- Post-vaccination monitoring: Mild lethargy or reduced appetite for 24 hours is normal after vaccination. Serious reactions (facial swelling, difficulty breathing, collapse) are rare but require immediate veterinary attention.

UAE Pet Registration, The Vaccination Connection
In Dubai, all dogs must be registered with Dubai Municipality (for Dubai residents) or the relevant authority in other emirates. Registration requires proof of current rabies vaccination. The process typically involves:
- Obtaining the rabies vaccination certificate from your vet (done at the 14–16 week appointment)
- Applying for registration through the Dubai Municipality app or website
- Paying the annual registration fee (nominal charge)
- Receiving your dog's registration tag, which must be worn at all times in public
We guide all Bolt's Family puppy buyers through this process and can answer any questions about pet registration in Dubai and other emirates via WhatsApp.

Can my puppy go outdoors before completing all vaccines?
Limited, careful outdoor exposure is acceptable and important for socialisation. Avoid high-risk areas (dog parks, communal grass areas frequented by many dogs) until 1–2 weeks after the final puppy vaccine. Carry your puppy in low-risk areas and socialise in controlled environments.
What if I miss a vaccine appointment?
Contact your vet immediately. Depending on how much time has passed, they may be able to continue the series or may need to restart from the beginning. Do not wait, gaps in protection leave your puppy vulnerable to serious disease.
Are imported puppies already vaccinated?
Not necessarily. If purchasing a puppy imported from overseas, request full documentation of any vaccines administered, including brand names, lot numbers, and dates. Your UAE vet may recommend additional vaccines based on the puppy's history and the local disease landscape.
How much do puppy vaccinations cost in Dubai?
The full initial puppy vaccination series typically costs AED 300–500 at most Dubai veterinary clinics, depending on the clinic and which vaccines are included. Annual boosters thereafter cost AED 200–400. These figures are a small fraction of the true cost of treating a preventable disease.
